Last Friday evening, September 4, the Mustangs of South Western visited the Warriors of Gettysburg and opened the 2015 season with the duo of quarterback Brock Geiman and receiver Noah Staub hooking up for a 74-yard touchdown pass.  Wes Sneeringer’s extra point kick put the Mustangs up 7-0 only 17 seconds into the game and the Mustangs never looked back.

The Warriors drove 33-yards in seven plays but Jeff Green intercepted a Tyler Wilt pass for the Mustangs at their own 16-yard line.  The Mustangs went three and out and punted.  The Warriors kept the ball for only one play as Tyler Fulmore recovered a fumble for the Mustangs.  The Mustangs then drove 71-yards in two plays, a 52-yard run by DeSean Crump and a 19-yard touchdown run by Jeff Green.  Sneeringer’s extra point kick put the Mustangs up 14-0 with 5:59 to go in the first quarter.

The Warriors had a 4-play drive end by turning the ball over on downs.  The Mustangs took over on the Warriors 42-yard line and Nigel Williams jaunted the 42-yards for a Mustangs touchdown.  Sneeringer’s extra point kick upped the score to 38-0 in favor of the Mustangs at the 5:53 mark of the third quarter.

The Mustangs then substituted liberally, giving second and third string players some playing time.  The Warriors kept the starters in the game and scored the final two touchdowns of the game.  Marquise Camel scored on a 5-yard run at the end of a 55-yard drive that featured a 50-yard run by Elijah Jackson, making the score 38-6 with 3:08 left in the third quarter.

The10-time Cavalcade of Bands, Tournament of Bands Group IV Champion and US Scholastic Band Champion South Western Mustangs Marching Band put on a stirring half time performance, presenting their 2015 field show “What If,” a musical and visual depiction of the process of implementing a change and making a difference.  The music is based on Michael Kamen’s “The New Moon in the Old Moon’s Arms.”  The show began with the inception of the idea or change, represented with the theme played by trumpet soloist Veronica Hurst.  Further numbers reflected the encountering of obstacles and challenges standing in the way of goals and a moment of reflection on the purpose and nature of change.  The closer continued to build upon the hope of this change and reached a climax where the change was successful.  The show ended with the fleeting sounds of the musical theme played by trumpet soloist John Dyson.

The Gettysburg Warriors Marching Band performed a pregame show “The Music of James Bond,’ featuring “For Your Eyes Only,” and “Goldfinger.”

The 21 member Mustangs Cheer Leading Squad and the Warriors Cheer Leading squad were both very impressive as they roused the faithful on both sides of the field.

The Mustangs of South Western are 1-0-0 overall and 0-0-0 in York Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association (YAIAA) Division I league play.

The Mustangs have a career record of 347-214-8.  The results of the 569 games played in the history of the South Western Mustangs are a career .619 winning percentage and a .624 non-losing percentage.

Next week the Mustangs host the Colts of Cedar Cliff.  Cedar Cliff opened the season with a 54-20 victory over the Comets of Penn Manor.  The Mustangs fired on all cylinders this week.  They are looking to continue their winning tradition and make this a memorable season.  GO MUSTANGS GO.
