THIS WEEK IN FLHS GRIDIRON HISTORY Week 1 Yrs End In 5

By Dick Engelhardt

Fair Lawn High School opened September 13th, 1943. This record covers years ending in 5.

1945 – New coach Frank Bennett’s CUTTERS joined the Bergen-Passaic Interscholastic League (B-PIL) with a 12-0 victory over the GOLDEN BEARS of Lyndhurst. Fair Lawn took the fierce 1945 – 53 B-PIL rivalry with Lyndhurst 5-4 (.556). The B-PIL became the Northern Bergen Interscholastic League (NBIL) in 1956.

1955 – Bennett’s CUTTERS were edged 12-7 by the Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League (NNJILHIGHWAYMEN of Teaneck in independent action. During 1954-58 independently and 1959-82 in the NNJIL our CUTTERS went 17-11-1 (.607) over the HIGHWAYMEN. Fair Lawn’s 20-6 victory in 2009 in North Jersey Tri-County Conference (NJTCC) Division 3 action put our CUTTERS up 18-11-1 (.621) in the series.

1965 – Frank Devens took over the reins following the death of Coach Ed Sheehy and his CUTTERS beat the CRUSADERS of East Paterson 28-7 for their first victory in the series. During 1962-65 the tough CRUSADERS went 3-1 (.750) over our CUTTERS. Fair Lawn would go 8-0-1 (1.000) and take the NNJIL title. East Paterson became Elmwood Park in 1972.

1975 – New Coach Rich Szura’s CUTTERS were beaten 22-0 by the COMETS of Hackensack in NNJIL action. During 1959-82 in the NNJIL the COMETS went 16-7-1 (.696) over our CUTTERS. In 1959, Fair Lawn’s maiden season in the league, our CUTTERS won 27-6 and yet saw Hackensack take the title by half a game. Frank Bennett’s 1953 B-PIL champs shared the North Jersey, Section 1, Group III State title with the COMETS. Mike Alberque’s 2000 CUTTERS put up a whale of a battle before losing 14-6 to the nationally ranked COMETS in the States. The 5-0 Hackensack record in Big North Conference (BNC) crossover action in 2010 – 14 has the COMETS’ record against our CUTTERS 28-7-1 (.800).

1985 – Pete Natale’s CUTTERS returned to their old NBIL with a 14-10 interdivisional win over the COWBOYS of Pascack Hills. During 1984-86 and 1994-98 our CUTTERS went 6-2 (.750) over the COWBOYS. In NBIL interdivisional action.

1995 – Mike Alberque’s CUTTERS beat the NORSEMEN of Northern Valley, Demarest 40-21 in NBIL Division 1 action. Our CUTTERS took the 1956-58 and 1990- 2008 NBIL rivalry 13-9 (.591). The NORSEMEN went 2-0 in 2010 and 11 Big North Conference (BNC) crossover action. Fair Lawn leads the rivalry 13-11 (.552).

2005 – Greg Tanzer’s CUTTERS were shutout 38-0 by the GREEN RAIDERS of Ramapo in NBIL Division 1 action. The GREEN RAIDERS took the 1956-58 and 1984-2008 NBIL Division 1 rivalry 17-11 (.607).

THE GRIDIRON 1-2015

By Dick Engelhardt

It’s great to begin my 19th season as “The Voice of The CUTTERS on The Gridiron” as the CUTTERS of Fair Lawn High begin their 73rd football season. I became the announcer in 1997 after my twin brother, Bill, and I had been “spotters” for many seasons for long time popular Fair Lawn announcer, Joe Hausmann. Even then I enjoyed taking the crowd on my “Walk Down Memory Lane.” I look forward to the 2015 season with my spotter, Shawn Kerestes.

Amir Saadah, a 2000 FLHS graduate who played for Mike Alberque’s 1997-99 CUTTERS, took over in 2011 as the 11th Football coach in FLHS history. He followed Marty Fischbein 1943-44, Frank Bennett 1945-60, Ed Sheehy 1961-64, Frank Devens 1965-71, Al Reinoso 1972-74, Rich Szura 1975-77, Pete Natale 1978-87, Mike Alberque 1988-2001, Greg Tanzer 2002-06 and Stan Myles 2007-10. Their combined 1943-2014 record is 319-323-14 (.497).

Championships came in the Bergen-Passaic Interscholastic League (B-PIL) in 1945, 53 and 55 with co-championships in ’46 with the BUCCANEERS of Bogota and ’47 with the GOLDEN BEARS of Lyndhurst. My brother Bill and I were “Water Boys” on Coach Bennett’s ’55 team. Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League (NNJIL) titles came in 1965 and 66 with a tri-championship in 1980 with the FIGHTING MUSTANGS of Clifton High and the HORNETS of Passaic Valley. Northern Bergen Interscholastic League (NBIL) Division 1 championships came in 1984, 85, 87 and 89. The State playoff system began in 1974 and our CUTTERS have been in the playoffs in 1979, 80, 85, 87, 88, 89, 2000 and 2009.

Saadah has a fine coaching staff. Former Bogota Head Coach Nick DeStefano is the new offensive coordinator, Saadah continues as the defensive coordinator and Scott Leathem, who is the Lacrosse Head Coach; Anthony Tozzi and Alonso Escalante are assistant coaches, with Brendan and Brian Walis as volunteers. Ed Guy and Andy Berninger continue to coach the freshman team along with new volunteer Quintin Lopez. The names Berninger, Guy, Leathem, Saadah, Tozzi and Walis are big in FLHS Gridiron history.

This Friday at 7:00 our CUTTERS open the season at Caven Point in Jersey City against the RAMS of Dickinson High. Our heroes were scheduled to play Paramus Catholic at home on October 24th but the PALADINS will play the ASCENDERS of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida instead and Fair Lawn was able to schedule Dickinson away on September 4th of “Week 0,” the Labor Day weekend. The schedule is lopsided in favor of Away games because of that and the fact that, in 2014, the Clifton game was moved to Fair Lawn because the FIGHTING MUSTANGS’ new field turf wasn’t ready so the 2015 game is at Clifton. In 2009 in North Jersey Tri-County Conference (NJTCC) crossover action our CUTTERS beat the RAMS 41-8.

Fair Lawn got ready for the season with scrimmage action at SASSO FIELD against Hasbrouck Heights, Hawthorne, Manchester, Memorial of West New York, Secaucus and Verona. It was great to see Mike Alberque and Jim Beshaw. Mike coached our CUTTERS to a 71-61-1 (.538) record 1988-2001 taking the NBIL Division 1 title in ’89 and making the playoffs in ’88, ’89 and 2000. Beshaw was a popular assistant and freshmen coach. He thinks the seniors he last coached as freshmen in ‘13 could form the nucleus of a playoff contender! Our heroes figure to get off to a good start. From here it looks like Fair Lawn 27- Dickinson 6. GO GUTTERS GO!!!

SOUTH WESTERN MUSTANGS GRIDIRON 2015-1

By Bill Engelhardt
     ________

The Mustangs of South Western return to gridiron action Friday night, September 4, as they visit the Warriors of Gettysburg to kick off the 2015 season. The Mustangs are in Division I and the Warriors are in Division II of the YAIAA so this is a non-league contest.  Division I consists of Central York, Dallastown, New Oxford, Northeastern, Red Lion, South Western, Spring Grove, and William Penn.

The Mustangs begin their fourth year under coach Damian Poalucci and are looking forward to a successful season as they enter the 56th year of the football program.  They have a career 346-214-8 record with a .618 winning percentage and a .623 non-losing percentage.  They are 340-205-8 in regular season play.  This year the Mustangs have a great group of returning seniors, returning starters and lettermen, and some exciting new players to watch, and hope to resume the winning tradition, which includes 12 league titles since 1990 and 16 in the history of the school.

Seniors Skylar Bowman, Corbin Byers, Scotty Dickmyer, Tyler Fulmore, Brock Geiman, Robby Harrison, Zack Hughes, Noah Staub, and Josh Zeroth, and juniors Drew Hartlaub and A.R. Reusing are returning starters.  Seniors Mike Farace, Jeffrey Green, Matt Smolko, and Chris Steckel, and juniors Bubba Carbaugh, Jacob Muir, Carson Perry, Evan Raubenstine, and Nate VanCampen are also returning letterman.

Senior Mike Johnson, juniors Tommy Aumen, Desean Crump, Noah Langenfeld, and Teian Moore, and sophomores Thaddeus Davis, Kurt Eichhorn, Josh Higdon, and Brady Tyman are up and comers to watch this year.

The graduation of key players Luke Baugher, Matt Helwig, Tyler Jachelski, Ryan Krebs, Hunter Palmer, Brady Thayer, and Andrew Slater still leaves the Mustangs with a cadre of seasoned players.  Senior Brock Geiman was the very capable starting quarterback last year and saw significant playing time even as a sophomore, leaving the position in very good hands.

We look for Harbison and Fulmore to vie for the fullback position and lead the heralded rushing attack, and Green, Hartlaub, Hughes, Moore, Muir, and Perry will round out the offensive backfield and continue the great running tradition of the Mustangs.  Harbison led the vaunted rushing attack last year with 151 carries for 629-yards and 4 touchdowns, and Hartlaub rang in with 71 carries for 382-yards and 6 touchdowns before being injured midway through the season, so there is plenty of experience in the backfield.

We are looking for Staub, with 28 receptions for 432-yards and 5 touchdowns last year, to lead the receiving corps, along with Bowman, Byers, Langenfeld, and Smolko.  Hartlaub, with 18 receptions for 481-yards and 5 touchdowns, and Harbison, with 6 receptions for 99-yards, have experience catching the ball out of the backfield.

Among the returning players, Byers (26 tackles), Carbaugh, Dickmyer, Raubenstine (4 tackles), Reusing (1 tackle), Steckel (13 tackles), and Zeroth (32 tackles), have significant experience on either the offensive or defensive line and should figure prominently again this year.  The trenches will certainly be a significant factor in the success of the Mustangs this year.

Bowman (6 tackles), Farace (8 tackles), Fulmore (50 tackles), Harbison (1 tackle), Perry (4 tackles), Raubenstine (4 tackles), and Smolko (13 tackles), in 2014, leave the Mustangs in great shape at the linebacker position.

Green (5 tackles), Hartlaub (9 tackles), Hughes (23 tackles), and Muir (4 tackles) in 2013, should all see plenty of action in the secondary, with plenty of help from Geiman and Staub.

Geiman, with 2 kickoffs and 35 punts (for 1,254-yards and a 35.8-yard average), and 2 extra points in 2014, leaves the kicking game in experienced hands.

Damian Poalucci is ready and eager to lead the Mustangs into the new season against the Warriors of Gettysburg.  In his preseason outlook he said, The Mustang Corral should be filled with offensive excitement this season with numerous returning starters on the offensive side of the ball.  Brock Geiman returns to his Quarterback position and will be joined in the backfield by returning lettermen, FB Robby Harbison and HB’s Drew Hartlaub, Zack Hughes, and Jeff Green.  Mike Johnson, Teian Moore, Carson Perry, and Jacob Muir will add to the Mustang running game. Noah Staub returns to lead the receiving corps and with young Mustangs Noah Langenfeld, Caleb Stuller, Tyler Bynaker, Kurt Eichhorn, and Brady Tyman the QB’s should have many options to get the ball downfield.

The old cliché’ that “it all starts with the line” has never been more applicable.  The fate of the Mustang Football Team clearly rests up front.  The offensive and defensive line will be anchored by seniors Skylar Bowman, Josh Zeroth, Scotty Dickmyer, Mike Farace and returning junior starter AR Reusing.  Newcomers to the offensive and defensive line Bubba Carbaugh, Evan Raubenstine, Tommy Aumen, and returning TE’s Corbin Byers, Matt Smolko, Chris Steckel, and Chris Ginevra will play a vital role on both sides of the football.

The Mustangs return significant playing experience on the defensive side of the ball with Nate VanCampen, Matt Smolko, and Zach Hughes returning to their safety and OLB positions.  Tyler Fulmore will return to his ILB position and be joined by Evan Raubenstine, Colby Teal and youngster Kaiden Gaylord.  The defensive backfield will be manned by Drew Hartlaub, Jeff Green, DeSean Crump, and youngsters Josh Higdon, and Grayson Wingert.

FINISH is 2015 mantra in the South Western Corral.  The off-season work ethic in the weight room, 7v7s, voluntary camps, and instructional sessions was excellent, actually the best in many years.  The up and coming sophomores (Thaddeus Davis, Sam Hacker, Wyatt Laudicina, Sean Wolfe, and Jacob Sager) worked tirelessly this summer and may contribute to the returning players and lettermen noted above.

The absolute, number one, positive with this group has been the bond of classes and willingness to work together.  There has been outstanding senior/junior leadership from those players noted above (starters, lettermen, and “players to watch”) and these young men really want to continue the strong tradition of Mustang Football!

                                                                                                            Go Mustangs!!!!
                                                                                                            Damian Poalucci

From here it looks like the South Western Mustangs are ready and eager to provide all of us thrills and excitement in their 56th season.  I think the Mustangs are up to the challenge of resuming their winning ways and expectations are sky high.  I can’t wait for the start of the 2015 season.  GO MUSTANGS GO.
